History

Rooted in History Since 1900

The story of Mason House Event Center begins with both tragedy and resilience. On October 17, 1899, the original Masonic lodge that stood on this corner was destroyed by fire—a devastating blaze that claimed the lives of three firemen who fought to save it. In the wake of that loss, the community rebuilt with strength and determination. In the early 1900s, the handsome three-story brick Masonic Hall rose in its place, a symbol of renewal and permanence that still stands today.

Designed by Indianapolis architects W.S. Moore & Son in the Romanesque Revival style, the building was constructed with enduring craftsmanship and thoughtful architectural detail. Its distinctive corner oriel and conical tower make it one of the most recognizable structures along Knightstown’s Main Street, part of the historic National Road (U.S. Highway 40). Over the decades, the first floor welcomed various local businesses, while the Masonic Lodge occupied the upper levels—creating a space that blended commerce, fellowship, and civic life under one roof.

Today, Mason House Event Center carries that legacy forward with careful preservation and respectful restoration. Rather than erase its past, we have chosen
to honor it—maintaining the integrity of its brick façade, architectural character, and historic presence while thoughtfully adapting the interior for modern gatherings. Located within Knightstown’s designated historic district, the building stands as a reminder of the town’s resilience and architectural heritage. At Mason House, history is not only preserved—it continues to be lived in, celebrated, and shared.
